Last month saw the arrival of the much-anticipated latest issue of The Clongownian in the school. The journal was presented to the Headmaster, Mr Chris Lumb by the editor, Mr Declan O’Keeffe and later distributed to the pupils and staff. Every year The Clongownian attempts to reflect the breadth of activity in the school, be it academic, cultural, pastoral, religious or sporting and this issue is no different. In addition to the many regular features, this edition chronicles the numerous Bicentenary Events that peppered the historic academic year, 2014-15.
The front cover (and the leading feature article) pay tribute to the success of the Senior Soccer Team. While soccer is something of a Cinderella sport in Clongowes by comparison with its big sisters Senior and Junior Rugby, it was not always thus and the game, introduced to the school by the newly arrived Tullabeggars in 1886, enjoyed a golden age for some twenty years before it was overtaken by ‘the Rugby Game’ and the rest is history. The annals of the round ball game in Clongowes have received a fresh chapter in recent years and last season the senior team enjoyed their most successful season ever, winning four of the five competitions they entered.
A limited number of copies of this historic volume is available and may be obtained by sending a cheque for €50 (incl p&p), made payable to Clongowes Wood College, to: The Editor, The Clongownian, Clongowes Wood College SJ, Clane, Co Kildare. All proceeds will go to the Alberto Hurtado Bursary Programme.
