Clongowes was amongst the first schools in Ireland to introduce a Transition Year (TY) between Junior and Senior Cycles. This year of transition is Jesuit education in microcosm, as it offers students space to mature and develop through a broad range of learning experiences inside and outside the classroom.
The TY programme endeavours to inspire students to become Men for Others, to discover and develop their own individual gifts and strengths, to become more independent and to experience a year where the emphasis will be on individual responsibility. TY provides students with the skills and supports necessary to uncover their individual talents, aptitudes and abilities and thereby to grow as responsible, caring young men.
Along with formal academic studies, TY involves work experience and social awareness placements, community outreach, foreign language exchanges, an outdoor education trip, cultural experiences, visits by guest speakers and differential aptitude testing.
The TY students lead Clongowes annual fundraising drive for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin which includes the annual ‘Duck Push’. We are proud to say that Clongowes students have raised over €2 million to date for this very worthy cause.
‘The school’s TY programme is excellent. The curriculum is broad and balanced’.
