Clongowes Wood College SJ

A total of five teams and fourteen students from Grammar and Rhetoric represented Clongowes in Science and Business last week with varying degrees of success…

The tradition of science and mathematics is alive and well in Clongowes Wood and last Thursday, 12th November, the college received another accolade by coming first in the Regional ISTA Senior Science Quiz after a fourteen year drought. Three teams of Rhetoric students under the tutelage of Mr. Stephen O’Hara were competing alongside thirty-five other lineups at the event, which also saw our own Mr. Kevin Maume as MC for the night.

The questions were drawn from the Biology, Chemistry and Physics Leaving Certificate syllabi and were divided into eight rounds of six questions each. When the last question had been asked and answered and the marks totted up, it emerged that the Clongowes team of Patrick Delap, Michael Binchy and Sean McMahon (left to right above) had won the night. Two teams will now represent Clongowes in the National Final next week in Trinity College:

Team 1: Sean McMahon, Michael Binchy and Paddy Delap
Team 2: Frank Keating, Donnchadh Walsh and Marl O’Connor

Sean McMahon, Rhetoric

Not to be outdone, on the same night two teams consisting of eight Grammar students attended the CIMA Business Studies Quiz in the Institute of Technology Tallaght last Thursday, November 12th. Questions were equally divided between the Junior Certificate Business Studies Syllabus (and current business affairs) and a broad range of general knowledge topics.

Although the boys did not win, Charlie Kelly, JV Cummins, Gavin Larkin, Sean Brogan, David Gannon, Stephen McAleese, Mark Galvin and Tom Coghlan represented themselves, their teachers (Ms Elaine Liston and Mr Liam McAuley) and the school very well and were only a few points away from achieving third place.
