The Liffey Descent

The ancient and noble sport of canoeing has recently been rekindled in Clongowes Wood College, which had a fine record in the sport was in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. We had many years of friendly rivalry with The King’s Hospital, another stronghold of paddling and both Schools completed for the Prestigious Peter Storm team trophy while Patrick Maloney (OC’88) and Eddie Martin (OC’86) raced together in the Clongowes team during the 1980s. Now, through their sons Tadhg Maloney (Poetry) and Oscar Martin (Syntax), Clongowes Canoeing is back on track (as it were).

Following much success in 2015 (here) another very successful day was had today on the Junior Liffey Decent, starting at Salmon Leap and finishing at the Strawberry Beds, Lucan (10k). The boys paddled in all sorts of weather conditions with over 135 participants and finished among the medals as follows:

  • 1st place C2 category: Tadhg Maloney and Henry Tritschler (Poetry).
  • 3rd place C2 category: Sean Donovan and Tassilo Tiedemann (Poetry).
  • 2nd place K2 category: Oscar Martin (Grammar) who paddled with Aran Maloney (brother of Tadhg incoming Elements 2017)
