Elements Gaelic Football Blitz - Clongowes Wood College

Posted: 13th April 2013

On Thursday, 35 boys from Elements took leave from class to partake in the Kildare section of the Leinster First Year GAA blitz. Held at the St. Mary’s club in Leixlip, the boys’ excitement at having a day off (thanks to Mr. Nugent!) was dealt an early blow when they realised that they would be taking to a full sized pitch with just 13 men. Such has been the interest in gaelic football this year that two teams were entered. As luck would have it both Clongowes sides were drawn in the same group alongside Confey College and Oaklands CC. Surely the fitness from all those rugby matches would pay off?!

Despite a strong start the prospects of Clongowes ‘west’ were hampered when Confey College notched 2 goals in quick succession in the opening game. Clongowes ‘east’ meanwhile met their match in the form of Oaklands CC. In the next round Clongowes traded opponents. The eastsiders emerged victorious on this occasion, while the boys from the west just came up short. Finally came the Elements showdown on the field, with Mr. McElwee (east) and Dan the GAP (west) pitting their wits against each other off it. Naturally, Mr. Mac claimed the spoils in a 3-4 to 1-1 win.

Great credit is due to many of the boys who were taking to a GAA field for the very first time, while their more experienced colleagues should be acknowledged in the way that they helped them along every kick of the way.

Mr. McElwee
