After months of hard work and preparation with Mr David Scott, Ms Anne Conaghan and Ms Catherine Heslin, singers from Clongowes Wood College competed at the Interschool’s Music Festival at Wesley College last week. This is the leading music festival for primary and secondary schools in Leinster.

The weekend began in dramatic fashion however, as an outbreak of a vomiting bug among Elements students meant that the Junior Choir was forced to withdraw from the competition. However, Matthew Cassidy (Elements) went on overnight leave so he wouldn’t come down sick and this proved to be a wise decision. Singing in his first ever competition, he got through to the final of the Under 14 Popular Song Category, winning a Silver Medal.

Hugo O’Donnell (Grammar) was singing in two competitions: Under 16 Popular Song and Under 16 Classical Song. He got into both finals, winning two Silver Medals. For both Matthew and Hugo the adjudicators said their competitions were very close, and both were praised for their performances and potential.

The Senior Choir managed to avoid the vomiting bug and competed in the Frank Hughes Cup for male voice choir. This is keenly contested competition and adjudicator Prof Gerard Gillen awarded the choir ‘Highly Commended’ for their performance of ‘Oh Happy Day’ from the movie ‘Sister Act’.

All in all it was a good weekend for Clongowes with three Silver Medals and a Highly Commended Certificate out of the four competitions entered.
