Breaking the ice… - Clongowes Wood College

Posted: 2nd September 2014

On the glorious last day of summer the parents of Elements 2014/15 gathered in the salubrious surroundings of The Lyons Estate at the invitation of the Parents’ Association Committee.

The lunch intended to be an icebreaker for the new parents proved to be that and more. Tom Lane (OC’81) father of Peter (Elements) and Daniel (Poetry) took up a challenge and had a bucket of iced water thrown over him by Paul Dowling (OC’81). This was all in a good cause and a sum of in excess of €600 was raised for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association thanks to the kind generosity of those gathered.

Parents' Lunch

Seated according to the CWC House system parents mingled, new acquaintances were made and old friendships reignited. Parents listened keenly to the words of wisdom offered by both Fr. Headmaster Fr. Moloney, s.j and the Rector, Fr. Sheil s.j. They also learnt of an unscheduled fire drill the previous night and how the boys, from this experience, will quickly learn to fend for themselves in the school from a most witty Frank Kelly. Short speeches, made by the outgoing Chairperson of the Parents’ Association, Aiffric Egan and the Elements Rep for 2013/14, Roisin O’Connell Hussey welcomed the parents of the Elements Class of 2014/15 – the Bicentennial Elements – into the Clongowes fold and wished them good luck on their journey.
