Dr Elizabeth Walsh (Clinical Psychiatrist, UCHG), mother of Donnchadh (OC’16) and Richard (Rhetoric) visited Clongowes recently (Thursday, March 9th) to give a talk to Rhetoric entitled ‘Mental Illness and Minding Your Brain’.
Dr Walsh touched on the areas of stress and how to manage it as we head towards the Leaving Cert. In a lively discussion the presentation also dealt with the use of cannabis and other recreational drugs, and the connection and risks associated with possible schizophrenia and psychosis. Dr Walsh had many questions to answer from the assembled group, and many students continue the discussion with her after the presentation finished.
As students prepare to move to Third Level courses, and indeed summer holidays, the content presented was very much part of the reality of where many find themselves at this stage of their development. Dr Walsh was direct in her presentation, pulled no punches, and held the interest of all students right to the very end.
School Captain, Conor Galvin thanked Dr Walsh for putting together such an excellent talk and presented a token of appreciation on behalf of Rhetoric.
